The Senior Safety Ordinance is a piece of legislation that was written by Jane Addams Senior Caucus members in collaboration with many others, including progressive Alderwoman Maria Hadden of the 49th Ward, the ordinance’s lead sponsor.

The Senior Safety Ordinance was passed in July of 2020 and can now be accessed on the City of Chicago website.

HOW THE “SENIOR SAFETY ORDINANCE” KEEPS YOU SAFE DURING COVID - 19.

  • Wellness Checks For Seniors:

You will receive free wellness checks twice a week from a trained professional  that will monitor your symptoms, make sure you have everything you need and refer to your services. If you don’t want to receive a wellness check, you can opt-out! 

  • Free Food and Medical Delivery:

You can ask a staff person or someone doing a wellness check to coordinate free food and medication delivery to you. Requires building staff to assist residents with food and medication delivery within the senior building whenever necessary.

  • Protections for Staff:

All staff in the building must be given a mask to wear to keep themselves and seniors safe. 

  • Language Justice:

Requires that all communication between building staff/management and its residents, including wellness checks, be in the primary language of each individual resident. When requested by a resident, communications shall be provided in an alternative accessible format, such as large font or electronically.
